What is Body Mass Index (BMI)? Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical method to measure the weight of a person scaled according to height, to determine amount of body fat and it applied to both men and women.
The following are the BMI categories:
· BMI value of less than 18.5 is refer to as Underweight
· BMI value of between 18.5 and 24.5 is refer to as Normal weight
· BMI value of between 25.0 and 29.5 is refer to as Over weight
· BMI value of 30 and above is refer to as Obese
How BMI is calculated:
A: When measurement unit for weight is in kilograms (kg) and height is in meters:
Formula: weight (kg)/ [height (m)]2
Example: weight= 68kg, height= 165cm (1.65m)
Calculation: 68/ (1.65)2= 24.98
B: When measurement units for weight are in pound and height is in inches:
Formula: weight (lb)/ [height (in)]2*703
Example: weight = 150 lbs, height= 5’5” (65”)
Calculation: [150/ (65)2]* 703= 24.96
